Hanging Quilts Yes It Happens
In another discussion someone posed a question regarding whether or not anyone actually hangs quilts. Yes in fact the practice is common. It is wise when doing so to take them down frequently as they are prone to becoming misshapen or even tearing. The attached photos show a Dresden Quilt dating back to the 1930's. The blocks from this quilt were discovered in a box that someone deposited anonymously in a quilters corner booth at a relief sale in 2010. My bride rescued the partially completed quilt, disassembled it and found period materials to reconstruct it for sale at last years auction. In the process she fell in love with it. Thus it became her Christmas gift along with the custom made hanger illustrated in the second picture attached here. I should add that the holder runs the full length of the top of quilt and is two pieces so the quilt is supported evenly the full length. My resident expert tells me that it is best that the hung quilts be rotated periodically in order to allow the quilt to remain whole and properly shaped. The device we designed and built is actually two pieces of oak that are attached with screws to the wall and thn using attractive nut and bolt combination to clamp the quilt evenly from end to end Jim

Since my wife Ann quilts many larger quilts on her long arm machine and takes these quilts to top quilt shows. I have to come up with several methods to hold the quilt in its proper frame. These frame can be quit fancy with wodden flowers, birds and whorls on the front face with a plain back plate These are the quilt frame that clamps the quilt top all along the top' Ann has been swing rod pockets along the top of some quilts to were the quilt is treaded on the long rod is tacked to the back of the above quilt frame amd tighten to the front top pan Some quilt frames will be solidyly fitted arounnd 4 quilt edges so the quilt will not move on the frame. Sometimes the quilt frame can be more beautify thant the quilt.

I would love to see pictures. Although most of Jan's quilting is hand work she does a fair amount and even some machine quilting as well. I always error toward as close to invisible a frame as possible as I wish to highlight her fine work. Still I am always looking for new ideas. JIm

There is a groove routed in the back of the frame and the attached cross piece just below the cross piece holding bolts/screws the for the quilt binding to fit into. I snug the quilt down in the frame to force the binding againest the lower edge of the grooves in the face back and cross piece to keep the top of the quilt straight which applys even tension all across the top of the quilt which prevents quilt sagging at any point.fjimp wrote:Bill,

You are only limited by your imagination for the height and design of the quilt hanger face. Wood carvers can have a field day on the face of these quilt hangers.
I find many difficent hanger designs at our local xraft shows as this can be a big money makerfor the designer of these frames. Many frame are more breatiful than than th e quilt

Jim and Bill....
Thank you both for posting these. I have quilts from both sides of my family, some dating back to the early 1900s. It has been on my To-Do list for a long time to come up with a way to hang them for display. These are great ideas!
