Guys I am new to your forum. I do need your help, I have a problem with my Mark V that is driving me crazy. A little history I bought this machine about 4 years ago and have been slowly upgrading the tables to 510.

The crazy problem is today while trying to make a dado crossgrain the quill or something is moving slightly. I tightened everything down and then rechecked. I am trying cut a 1/2 inch deep 3/4 wide dado and the blade moves away from the power head. Any suggestions would really be appreciated.

I assume you are seeing this movement even with the spindle lock engaged. The first thing I'd check is the retaining ring behind the spindle knob. Remove the spindle knob (part 65 on this diagram http://www.shopsmith.com/service/headst ... iagram.htm) and check to make sure that the retaining ring (64 on that diagram) is installed properly in its groove and that is is snug up against the bearing behind it. If it isn't, you can get some in and out movement of the spindle.

Get a Sharpie or other marker that will mark a fine line. Mark everything: Everything - the headstock as it sits on the waytubes, the quill, the table. You will quickly discover where the movement is and can go from there.

Creep can occur because the headstock isn't clamped sufficiently or the table or something else.

Should be easy to track down.

Are ya sure the headstock, carriage and spindle locks are engaged?

If nothing else is 'moving', watch for blade warp due to over heating.

You do have all 5 locks secured!

Also check the set screw on the dado blade arbor. Maybe because of the weight of the dado blade, that one seems to loosen up on me more often than the regular saw blade set screws.
