Lacquer or Polyurethane

Post by dan1999 »

I was just wondering if there is anyone else out there besides me that uses lacquer as opposed to polyurethane. I sprayed a set of doors (16) in a total time of about 90 minutes that is both sides, once. How much time would it take with Poly?

I am not bringing the rubs or the schellacs or the oils into the equation because those time of finishes will deteriorate with time unless very good care is used.

To me the the lacquer and the poly are the ones that will last.

Now I have surely stepped on other peoples toes with my statement above, but I have a thick skin, tell me your preference and why?

I wood knot think that the poly wood take anymore time to spray than the lacquer. Recoat times wood differ.

Recoat time for water based poly is 2 hours in my neck of the woods.

Didn't lacquer go out of favor about the same time as chrome and plastic dinette sets in the 50s?

Lacquer has nowhere the durability that urethanes have, so I won't use them anymore.

Also, lacquers are very nasty to the environment with their high VOCs while urethanes are much cleaner.

Lacquers

Actually lacquer is still one of the most used forms of sealing wood, most wood kitchens are made with a lacquer finish it is very durable and you can insert pigments into the lacquer to tone the wood finish to practically any colour.

Lacquer is available in either solvent or water base. However the solvent based product actually works better in my opinion. The newer types of lacquer that have been developed over the last 10 years have greatly reduced the amount of VOC's, the only thing is that the solvent type stinks more, but dries quicker. In production time is money. I know that you can shoot poly through a spray gun but I just don't care for the results as much. I also don't like to use a paint brush, takes too long and the results are not as good.
