New Shop Smith Mark V Owner

Post by plantdr »

Hey Folks, I have just acquired a shopsmith Mark 5 manufactured in 1986. I know nothing about this equipment and trying to decide if I should sell it or keep it. It's quite interesting in that it has NEVER been used. It is a basic model with no accessories. Can anyone give me advice as to it's value. Also, with it is a BRASS Belt Buckle which I can find no information about and am curious as to the value of the belt buckle. Thanks in advance for help.

Well, if your into or interested in woodworking I would say keep it and make some saw dust. As far as the belt buckle i have seen them sell of E-Bay for anywhere from $20-$40.

Welcome to the forum. I would say keep it since you already have Radial Arm Saw, Table Saw (entry level), Miter Saw, Hand Tools. You could use it as a lathe.

I have found that my 510 table saw is great for handling most items. If I am ripping plywood I drag out my Delta contractor saw. I have had my machine for a couple of years now and I am slowly getting more used to using all the functions. Read, watch and give yourself some time. I think you will slowly grow to like the machine. I does take a bit more input from the operator than the stand alone machines.

I voted to sell my RAS once the Shopsmith was in hand. I have a small power mitre box that covers much of the cross cut duties. Having a small shop the RAS space was needed for other things.

Good Luck..........Bob
