Newbie with an old machine

I recently bought an old Mark V off craigslist for 100$, figured was cheap enough to take the risk. The motor was out of the machine but everything looked to be there as far as someone with no experience with these could tell and the motor worked when plugged in.

Now I have put everything back together and am running into problems... go figure! The on off switch doesn't work at all, I am assuming just needs a new switch, the motor will run when on the slowest setting but the second I try and speed it up (putting more of a load on) it pops my breaker. I took the motor back out and let it run for a minute by itself, unplugged it and have a little smoke coming out of the back.

The owner never used the machine, was his wife's fathers and just sat the way it was for 15 years.

Should I just cut my loss and by a new motor or think its worth digging into?

Any suggestions would be great!

Shopsmith is a 1956 model, motor is a GE 3/4 HP, 3450 RPM, 110 V.

Does shopsmith rebuild these motors? If so any ballpark figures?

You will be getting great info from really knowledgeable guys very soon I suspect. In the meantime, I will state the obvious and say to NOT run the motor again until you get some guidance on checking it out and diagnosing (as well as curing) the problem. In the meanwhile, you might inventory the parts that came with it against the standard accessories shown on the website and see what you still need to complete your machine.
So, welcome!! to the world of Shopsmith. I have a '55 that I bought (not for $100) and basically rebuilt. Many others on here have done complete restorations and documented them for the rest of us. So, no matter what shape it is in, or what it needs, the answers are in this forum.
Look for the sticky post at the top of this section of the forum with lots of good info for new owners and first timers.
Post pics. We'd all love to see what $100 buys in your neck of the woods.

Shopsmith does not have available the 3/4 HP motor. The 1 1/8 HP motor part #513964 was $358.18 from Shopsmith. Ebay has the 3/4 HP and 1 1/8 HP motors listed most of the time. I find the 3/4 HP motor is more than enough for all but the quick cutting of thick hardwood but slowly still works for this motor. Of course, a sharp saw blade helps too. Contact me if you need additional motor information or looking to rebuild or another 3/4 HP motor. I have the reversible and/or 110/220 VAC Shopsmith motors available some of the time.

I took the motor apart, figured if its fried then it doesn't really matter. I don't know a whole lot about electric motor anything, I was thinking may be the brushes are worn out and getting to hot being the reason for popping my breaker? like I said I am no expert, any tips would be great!

Do take it apart, then show us some pix. We be interested in the color of the windings.
