Jointer noise

Post by gtseraf »

I have a MKV with a jointer, which has worked well in the past. It has started to make a high pitched whine noise, which gets worse as the RPM is increased.

My guess is that the bearing may be on the way out. All the screws on the jointer are tight and I cannot see any obvious problems here.

Any ideas??

Does the cutter head rotate very freely when disconnected from the headstock?

There could be pitch/sawdust buildup around the bearing sides.

If not, your guess is a likely correct one.

thanks, yes, it rotates quite freely but (I may be imagining this) it does not rotate as long as it used to. I'll look around and try to clean it up a bit more.

If it is the bearing, is this a relatively straightforward replacement. I live in Australia and am faaaar away from the specialists.

The bearings are easily replaced. Make a note of the bearing numbers and most any supplier can provide replacements. If you are not confident or do not have the tools to install them yourself any small machine shop or lawn mower shop should be able to do the job.
