Pop-up bench dog. Used with end vice on woodworking bench.

Really convenient to have but rather difficult to install if your work bench was not made for them.

I have a pair just like these that I cannot get to sit flush with the bench top but they are just too neat to discard.

I too have one of these, well maybe not exactly but it looks pretty close.

I like it for an adjustable stop while hand planing.

I don't recall any issues installing mine but then that was a lot of years ago. I do remember installing it but the main issue was just where I should locate it....

It looks like they would be difficult to install. A square area would have to be routed for the body and a hole augered out for the tapered post. 2 screws hold it to the table.
Wouldn't pegs that fit in holes work better?... Like on the Festool Multifunction Table

These things are old, maybe mid 1970's or so. That was how it was in the old days of woodworking, you didn't have a Festool table to just pull out and use....

This is really no different to mount then this project:

Or installing a door set in a new blank door....

A brace and bit and a chisel would be my choice of tools to install that thingey!;)

P.S. Add a hammer to that tool list.

If it was that simple, I would had it done years ago.

So how is it not so? Elucidate me.;) Apparently I have overlooked something?

Drill the hole. Mark out the square outline. Chisel out the outer shape to thickness(different at each end) of the thingey . Chisel out the hinge and detent pin relief. Mount with screws after verifying chiseling depth/fit.

One thing puzzles me - why the taper?

I don't have one (yet, but it looks like it would be a great addition to my workbench), but I think that the tapered part would have rock in the hole as it was raised or lowered, as the pivot is at the top of the tapered part.

On the list for my next trip to Lee Valley.:) Mortised Bench Stop
