Dresser Complete

As promised, here is a picture of the completed dresser I made for our bedroom.

The exterior is made from quarter sawn oak veneer plywood and quarter sawn solid oak. The interior is maple veneer plywood and solid maple drawers.

For the finish, I wiped on General Finishes water based stain (Pecan) and sprayed on 5 coats of General Finishes water based High Performance Polyurethane.

I was pleased with the results but I really disliked the water based stain. Even after cutting it with 15% water, it dries too quickly making it hard to remove from the areas where it was applied a little thicker.

The water based poly was easy to spray right out of the can. It seemed to be very forgiving as this was my first time using an HVLP sprayer (Earlex 5500) and I know I had some areas that were heavier than others. But after it dried (about 45 minutes) I couldn't tell the difference.

Next is the headboard to be followed by a dresser for the wife, two night stands and a mirror. I learned a lot making this piece so I think the next ones will go a little quicker. Hopefully I'll be nearing completion this time next year.

Beautifully done! You do very good work! Your dresser will be a source of pride for both you and your wife. Later on- a family heirloom!:D

Very nice indeed!!

I've tried General Finishes High Performance Poly and their less expensive Polyacrylic. I can't tell the difference going on or when it sets up, except on the Discover card. I apply with a painting pad.

Yeah, during construction I wasn't sure if I was making a dresser or a tank.

It is very heavy.

Outstanding Bill!!! Looks like picture from a magazine.

I am entertaining building a new bedroom suit. The wife really likes the sleigh bed design which I think might work well with the chest of drawers you built. Are you using a set of plans or magazine or just winging it (if winging it I am even more impressed;-)?

I could never wing something like that. A designer I am not and hardly a creative bone in my body. I followed the plans provided in Vol. 35 / No. 206 of Woodsmith magazine (came out around March of this year). No. 207 (May) has plans for a matching bed with a headboard and footboard and No. 208 (July) will have plans for the nightstands and mirror. This magazine is great for my level of woodworking skills as it does an excellent job of providing step-by-step instructions and pictures. The magazine is all woodworking and no advertising. Usually around 50 pages - 6 issuer year. If you decide to built this, let me know. There are a few things I can pass along to you that I would do differently than suggested in the magazine.
