My wife has this old chopping thing that looks like this

She has requested that I handle it. I had picked up some sycamore a while back for several projects, including this one. I've never worked with sycamore and I'd also read that it might be a good wood for the projects, so no time like the present to have a go at it.

I had cut off a chunk of the wood and set it aside until the time was right to get going on the project.

Since the handle was going to wrap around the cutter I cut the blank in half and squared the ruff cut after taping the two halves back together.

I decided to just turn the square rather then "octagoning" it. Went with the stubs like drive and a cup live center so it would be more secure and less likely to split in a catch. Turns out there was no catch and it turned fine.

This is as far as I've gotten and I'm done for the day. Weather permitting I should be back at it tomorrow.

Split it in half again and then routed out the center to fit the chopper, a little on one side a little on the other.

Nice job; it looks great! I really love sycamore. Its a very handsome wood.

Yep I getting more and more behind on my projects... I still haven't finished this one.

I too like the look of the wood, my first experience with it has been very positive.
