Fan sheave woes

Arghhhmnmphfnononononooo!

New fan sheave arrived. Here it is on the shaft with the new spacer behind it:

This can't be right. That's almost a *half inch* gap between the sheave and the fan plate (compare Dusty's 3/16). In this location the belt isn't remotely straight, and the setscrew doesn't even align with the access hole.

What the $#@!%#@! is going on??!!!

By contrast, this is how it's supposed to be- the sheave rim just barely clears the motor plate.

Most of the spacer should be inside the end housing with very little showing. Check the width (12mm, .472") of the front motor bearing. I have several ball bearings were the inside race width extended pass the outside race width about 1/8" (rough guess) on each side left over from my past. These would fit the motor but have no idea what they are used for.

I only fight a clearance problem for a little while. I either add/remove washers/shims, cut off any excess or countersink the spacer. If you have a good machinist ruler or measuring tool, you should be able to come real close to the actual value.

Cripe! I feel your pain! Your photo looks like mine did when I tried to use the new spacer with the old one still in place. Until that time, I didn't realize there was such a thing as a spacer.

Take a look to see if there is already a spacer or extra bearing, etc, hiding in there somewhere. Have you tried to slide on the new sheave without the new spacer.?

If this doesn't help, I'm completely out of long distance ideas - at least for now.

This, gentlemen, is me giving myself a public dope-slap:

D'OH!!!

Chuck had it figured out over a week ago, but only with his post last night together with Ed's did it occur to me to go poking around *inside* the motor housing. And a little diligent work with a jeweler's screwdriver prised it out - the sad, battered, deformed remnant of the original spacer, worn down so far that it wasn't even visible- so I had just assumed it was gone.

After that, everything fit together just as advertised Ready to rock and roll in the morning.
