Shopsmith Customer Support

Post by jhanby »

I don't think I have ever had dealings with better customer support than Shopsmith's. I recently ordered the upgrade bandsaw cover along with a help kit. With the cover I also ordered the dust collection retro-fit. I discovered that the new cover already had the dust collection port and called them, but it was after 4:00 PM (central) on Friday and they were gone for the day. I believe I left a message about the problem and said I would call again Monday morning. Before I could get someone from Shopsmith back on the phone they had already corrected the order! I went ahead and added the dust collector retro-fit for my jointer. To further provide great service, they shipped the part of my order they had on hand ASAP even though the "back ordered" part arrived the next day (which they also immediately shipped). I was going through the package for the jointer upgrade and discovered that there were three parts that may have been left out. I was actually convinced that they discovered that the existing parts on the jointer were fine and the instructions just didn't reflect that fact. Before I can even call to ask about it, I get a notice that they are shipping those three redundant (at least I think they are) parts.

I needed another latch for my Hitachi router kit (I was going to leave the fixed base attached to my table) and it took Lowe's almost 6 months to get the part and I had to keep riding them to make sure it was actually ordered (the first "fulfilled" date arrived and I discovered that their order had been rejected and they never noticed!). With that the kind of service being the norm, Shopsmith's is like a slap in the face....a good one!

You might have had better luck ordering the Hitachi parts from from ToolPartsDirect

I'm amazed that you can still order parts for a machine that was built in 1953, even if the parts are back ordered. The fact that Shopsmith had the vision to build each new version of the Shopsmith backwards compatible is unheard of in the tool business. I'd love to see my "Greenie" still doing what it does best in another 60 years. Too bad I won't be around to use it.
