rcplaneguy sent me a pm as a result of my comment after he posted a pix of his 510 main table.

His pix showed an early 510 rail with holes and jack screws that looked like the later version.

Here is a post showing the versions that I have.

He inquired of what I was referring to. This is my way of showing him.

I took this a step further and took pix of the two different jack screws.

Thanks for the info, I did not know 510s had differences in rail mounting/lock knobs!

I have always assumed the newer larger ones were a part of the change that redesigned the tubes.

If I buy the 520 upgrade I bet I would have problems with the threaded holes (in the tables). Perhaps they would have to be drilled/sized.

Drilled out, yes. Middle hole 'moved', quite likely!

With an older version update kit, ya get a drill bit(IIUC).

And incredible as it may sound, if you order the right parts, and more importantly get sent the right parts, the new stuff may fit perfectly with no extra work involved (no drilling...)

Really!

If you buy the 510-520 upgrade from Shopsmith, do it over the phone and tell them about your 510 fence rails. They have a different set of 520 fence rails for the early 510 with different mounting holes from the later versions. If you buy it off of Ebay there is a high probability that you will be drilling some holes of your own.

OK Guys, help me unnerstan!

The 520- upgrade kits for 510 early/late have different rails, the difference being the center mounting screw(?) location.

As for drilling, do the threads not need to be reamed out on an dearly 510?(hence the need of a drill bit to do so)

I have thought the early 510 also required drilling the center hole at the different location.

The slop that allows 'setting' the 520 rail height is in the mounting holes in the rail.
