Another Double Bearing Quill Question

Post by alberrt2 »

Shopsmith has a great price on the double bearing quill upgrade this weekend. The shopsmith catalogue indicates that the quill cannot be used for a gilmer belt machine, however the sale indicates that it can be used for all older mark v's. Has anyone upgraded the gilmer based machine to a two bearing quill?

Gilmer double bearing quill

Post by billmayo »

Skip Campbell skip@mkctools.com did sell a double bearing quill for the Gilmer drive. I find that installing the bearing 202KDD5 ($13.26) from ebatmus.com works very well as a quill bearing on the older Shopsmiths. This is a more precision (C1) and higher quality bearing than the original bearing used.

Bill do you know if all the factory double bearing quills had the same size bearings? Do you have a recommendation for those?

Thanks.
