I clicked the last link in post #6 to view the YouTube video; very innovative machine by the way! After that I'm not sure what happened . I emerged from a YouTube surfing induced trance 30 minutes later and found myself mesmerised by this amazing Marble Machine:
It's amazing to me for three reasons - the builder's creativeness, his engineering prowess and his patience. He says he hand cut all the pieces. It looks like it to me - no dark brown or black edges to indicate LASER cutting like a lot of this type of art has incorporated. Just amazing! There are a great deal more videos of some very innovative machines made from wood - some useful, some not so useful. There are a few out there of a table top that opens up and raises expansion leaves from underneath as you rotate the table - genius!
The next time you think your idea is stupid, remember someone in a meeting once said, "let's make a movie about tornadoes full of sharks!"
You'll find lots of wooden wonders if you start perusing his site!
I've seen him on YouTube before. I watched a video he made where he was experimenting with his table saw trying to see how the blade could snag a long sleeve shirt. He was basically trying to disprove the theory for a commenter who admonished Wandel for wearing long sleeves around his table saw while working. Matthias is incredibly smart and creative, but that video turned me off because he was basically saying "I think I'm smarter than you, so kiss off".
I did just watch his video about his Pantorouter machine. It's very impressive. The guy is definitely wicked smart.
