noise at lower pulley

noise at lower pulley
Hey guys, my son inherited a shopsmith #8464. It appears that the lower pulley is rubbing the plate behind it. Is there some adjustment or is this indication of a bearing or something? I have an older shopsmith myself and it is not making this noise.
Thanks in advance.
Thanks in advance.
What model SS does he have? I'm assuming from the description and the serial # that it is a 10E but want to make sure I know what's being diagnosed.farmall1 wrote:Hey guys, my son inherited a shopsmith #8464. It looks just like my old green one but it is gray. I assume it is in that 1973 to 1978 range of serial numbers.
Actually, I went out with a punch and hammer and gently tapped the metal plate and it stopped hitting it. I have been trying to find info on how to oil the sheaves but have been looking for 30 minutes or so with no luck. Anyone know where I can find that?

The oil hole is hidden under the spring near the base.

The first picture shows the oil hole and the set screw location. 2nd picture shows the spacer at the base of the shaft that holds the sheaves far enough away. The 3rd picture shows the motor sheave, set screw, and correct spacing between sheave and plate. (Sorry that the photos are huge, I'm posting on my phone and I can't be bothered to size them down
)

Shopsmith Motor Fan Sheave Spacer
I have a dozen or so of the original Shopsmith motor Fan Sheave spacers in my drawer. These spacers vary in length from .385" to .466" They go from being very thin material to much thicker material. I have been using a copper shim washer (.050") between this spacer and the fan sheave to get around 1/16" clearance between the fan sheave rim and the metal plate on the motor. I was able to find some lengths of copper pipe/tubing 5/8" ID and cut a batch of these spacers from .440" to.450" in length that I use now.
Since the motor belt is seldom centered on the 2 sets of sheaves, I found that the little extra space between the fan sheave rim and metal motor plate does not create any additional belt problems or appear to create any motor cooling problems. I am still finding the fan sheave set screw starting to loosen on about 5% of the motors. I believe letting the floating sheave go and snap into the fan sheave when removing the belt has caused most of these problems.
