My first package arrived from SS today!

Post by pinkiewerewolf »

OK, I'm pretty excited.
Because these upgrades that are better than I expected, even though most would consider them to be small items to change.
I only replaced the used miter and safety grip and added the 24" extension but what a difference they make.
The miter is now square with the saw blade when I tighten it. and the safety grip has been upgraded so that it is easier to use.
The overly well used grip & miter I bought with the old Mark V weren't square with the blade no matter what adjustment I ould try to make.
Now, smooth as silk and finger tight is all I need for the miter or the safety grip.
I am also now the proud owner of a copy of the Shopsmith Journals by Rick Davis.
My weekend is set!
:)

You're on your way! Be sure to "square up" the table and fence with the blade. Did you get a new thin kerf carbide blade?

The thin kerf blade is on the next order.
I found one blade in the set that came with the Mark V that is in great shape.
I'm crossing my fingers that I don't dull it too badly before more arrive.
I'll be finishing up the shelves that I've been putting off, (school has been hectic + I've had a bad cold) the new miter gauge will keep my cross cuts square.
The table and blade are squared up and I have a bit of help today so there shouldn't be any excuses left for me.:o
I don't know if anyone else has tried this but I found a "shorty" Mark V chasis online and bought it. My intentions are to use it to run the accessories, but mainly as an out feed table.
My thinking is that I can adjust it to the height of the Mark V and use a spare main table to assist with cutting long boards and sheets.

Shopsmith Shorty

Post by billmayo »

I find that the Shorty (way tubes - 34", bench tubes = 34 3/4") is more usable for me than the regular Shopsmith. The Shorty has the carriage and main table whereas the Mini cannot use them. I never thought to use one as a infeed and/or outfeed table. I find new uses the more I use them. I found that this was the shortest length tubes where the conical sanding disc can be used. Since this is normally the second or more Shopsmith for me and my customers, I use the 3/4 HP motor as it works great for the SPTs and accessories. Since the buyer already has all the accessories from his regular shopsmith, I do not include any with it. This makes the Shorty sell for about half the cost of a regular used Shopsmith. I can sell them as fast as I make them. Of course, I believe everyone should have a least one Shorty in their shop.

Way to go, Pinkie. Happy 4 ya'. I know the temptation to wake up the neighbors by sawing at 4 AM. That's why I enjoy this forum as well. Seems heaven touches my garage when there, eh?

Bill, I enjoyed you SS custom site. The construction Mark V looks like just the ticket for wheeling around a site.
I love the ideal of a custom painted Mark V. When you do one I'd love to see the results. I've seen some custom painted 10E & 10ERs that look really sweet.

Len, I've already been guilty of walking out to gaze at the Mark V in the wee hours of the morning.
Now I'm tempted to fire it up.:D
(the neighbors German Shepard would join in a chorus with me I'm sure)
My cold kicked into high gear, so my project is being put off again. Once I'm going strong I'll try to post up some pictures.

Pinkie - stealing out to take a peek? Man - You're hooked!!!!

Just get some rest and wait! You'll feel better and safer at the tool! Then enjoy!

This waiting has to be one of the hardest things! I presently waiting for some wood to get a bit less moisture content - I cant hardly stand it! It may take another couple of weeks.:(

You're right Chuck, I'm hooked. It has been too long since I've worked with wood. It'll be good to get back in the saddle.

On a side note, I needed the key to my Jacobs Chuck, and Ace came through for me with a K-32 Jacobs brand Key. I had called SS customer service and they put me onto True Value since they haven't handled the Jacobs Chuck in a long time. I chanced Ace since it was on my way and they had them. The part # in the upper left corner of the package is 30251.
