SS quill getting hot and seizing problem

Post by jere »

I just change the bearings in my shopsmith and started a large rolling pin project. I am not sure if I messed up something in reassembly or if there was already a missing part. but the quill assembly is getting so hot there is thermal expansion somewhere from something ,and the quill is seizing after a little use. then the belt losses cohesion and starts slipping. anyone care to guess the issue? am I just working on too large a price maybe( about six inches wide)?

Are you observing hot parts, or is that a conclusion based upon it 'seizing'. If hot parts, what ones?

Which belt starts slipping? Is it actually seizing, or does the slipping imply that?

Can you feel the quill shaft friction?

As for reassembly, how was that done, and what size bearings did you use? Did you use a bearing puller or some other method of pressing them on?

6" diameter(?) by length(?)?

Missing part(s)??????

And, which quill version?

I would suggest that you remove the quill and attempt to spin the inner shaft. It should move freely]This Sawdust Session video[/URL] may provide some assistance

We need a bit more info. The quill housing, the black cylinder that comes out of the headstock when you advance the quill, Is that the part that is getting hot? If so the new bearings are wrong or bad. If something else is getting hot, then there may be other issues.

the quill is the dual bearing design from the early 80s, 83 I think.

the parts that were in the quill were a spacer with a collar two bearings and two c clips. the bearings did not need pulled with a bearing puller even though I had a few ready to use. the bearings slid off and back on by hand with just a
little oil. I found this a little strange but since there was no play when reassembled I figured they were good.

I can only feel friction when the quill heats up, the shaft that extends when drilling is what gets hot, that I can see. when everything is cool I can turn everything by hand. it is hot enough in some cases that the rubber spacer starts smoking. this happens after about 10 minintes or less of use with the lathe but not other configurations such as disk sander moulder or table saw.

as for which belt slipping I have not checked that. I just hear a squeal at the same time the lathe stops spinning. the v belt is a link belt not sure if those squeal but it would be my guess if they do. it hasn't been holding up that well.

I think it is time to take it apart and examine parts for heat discoloration etc.

Posting pix here of it disassembled, but with parts placed in the order you assembled them may help us decipher this mystery.

There is definately something amiss here!

A bearing is complaining loudly!!!

thanks for the link, that's the one I used as instruction the first time around. too bad he doesn't actually show changing the bearings.

I am really thinking about swapping the v belt , in my case the link belt out. I don't think it is slipping until after something else is causing the heating problem.

thanks for the terminology help, the quill housing is what I can tell is getting hot. I am in the Akron area in new Ohio. I will have to play around in the settings to figure out how to add my location. as for the bearings I confimered them with them to be the right size with some dial calipers before and after I bought them or so I thought. they were the same size as the old pair, with very simaliar numbering.

What 'numbering' was on the original, and what 'numbering' was on the new ones. Brand names may help also.

The collar is not rubbing on the quill housing is it?
