Helo everyone.I just bought a SS markV 510 with jointer,belt sander,scroll and band saws as well as the 5:1 and dust collector.i look forward to getting to know the machine.
I build furniture for a living .Most from Reclaimed Barn wood.i have a facebook page under Paul's Green Barn.i lost my shop to a fire in December and i'm loooking for this 510 to allow me to continue building while replacing my shop.?I hope it works well as I'm thinking of getting a couple more 510 or 520 power units as work stations for myself or any helpers.My new shop will be built on the leftover deck of my old and measure 20'x40'.
i look forward to learning from you all and seeing the work you do with your ShopSmiths.Thanks

Do not overlook the older models for work stations. Yes that includes the model 10.

What would you say the best uses are for the old Green 3/4hp units as a work station?I'm guessing lather and drill press?

Sanding station, bandsaw, jig/scroll saw, shaping . . . just about anything other than table saw. Nice thing about the SS, one SS can do all those things although not simultaneously. A good way to get back to normal with less $.

Bill Mayo claims the 3/4hp motor is near the same as the 1 1/8 hp motor. Most operations do not require 1hp +.

Very true. Almost all my personal Shopsmiths have used the 3/4 HP motor. During my time of motor testing, I found most 1 1/8 HP motors only had up to 10% more power/torque than the 3/4 HP motors. I found that the 1 1/8 HP motor did help when using the thickness planer or sawing hardwoods or when using a dull saw blade. Many of the SHORTY and MINI Shopsmiths I sold had the 3/4 HP motor which was reversible so a SPT could be mounted on both ends. I should say that I found the early cast iron AO Smith 3/4 HP motor (54-55) provided the most torque and could handle higher current draw ( over 15 AMPs) under load without problems than any of the other Shopsmith motors. I believe this is due to the larger and longer rotor and heavier coil wire in the windings. Two of my Shopsmiths now have this motor installed that I made reversible which was the easiest ones I have done.

thanks Bill for all the information.I love the looks of those old green and brown machines.I'm also partial to Antique tools in general.I have a build option for my furniture where i use Antique Hand tools for the entire build process once the materials are roguhed out using power tools.I've built a half dozen dining tableand bench sets that way so far.
do you have equipment posted on *bay?
i remember seeing a reversable power unit there.
