LUMBER LIQUIDATORS… ummmm???

Post by idcook »

Do they actually sell lumber?

I’ve been crawling all over this site and I ain’t seed nary a stick a wood yet.

Is this place strictly devoted to flooring?

Trying to find nearby sources… other than home depot.
Like maybe an actual lumberyard.

Seems they used to be all over the place when I were a lad. What happened to the world while I was away?

In my area the stores are strictly flooring. Pretty good prices on close out and discontinued styles.

You can strike out SURE and be completely accurate. Most of what the sell is not lumber but "chicken parts". Parts is parts you know.

Do you have a planer?

I've found Craigslist to be the key to a veritable treasure trove of rough-cut lumber here in Central Ohio, priced at a fraction of normal retail. My only problem is limited storage space, which I partially solved by sacrificing one workbench (OK, a clutter-bench, actually  ) to free up wall space for a lumber rack with about 500 bd-ft of storage capacity.

IIRC, you are in the marketing business, so I'm guessing that you live in the NYC area. Here's a link to one promising Craigslist ad for NYC. I simply searched for "hardwood lumber" on the NYC Craigslist site to find that listing.

Here in the Buckeye state, searching only for "hardwood lumber" misses most of the good deals. Instead, search for the type of wood that you are interested in. For example, suppose I want some maple to build a workbench. I search for "maple lumber", "maple boards", and "maple board". (That last variant catches listings that give either quantity or pricing in units of board-feet.). This also leads to serendipitous discoveries such as this, which I hope to snag when I have time for a short road trip. That ambrosia maple would make a gorgeous gun cabinet someday .. plenty of time for it to dry before I get around to that!

We built a house last year and priced flooring. LL had some of the highest prices for flooring in this area. Even their sale price was higher than others.

Just as I’d suspected. LUMBER liquidators my foot. There oughta be a law against misleading vendor names. I wasted a half hour looking for what they don’t offer.

Thanks for the links and instructions guys.

So far, I’ve shown a remarkable capacity for spending lots of time and money to accomplish virtually nothing. Odder still, I’m enjoying it. smh

Woodfinder is pretty useless. I have one of the finest hardwood suppliers two miles from my house. He has any hardwood, domestic or imported and every kind of veneer plywood available, but Woodfinder can't find it. And, I don't pay any shipping.

I have found my phone book to be much more useful than the internet for finding wood.
