Bandsaw - Tilt Lock Problem "Fixed" - Post #3

This is a continuation of my posts on 3/5 and 3/10. If you remember, I have a cast iron table and the table clamp bolt and split bushing were turning. I could not lock the table angle.

After a long conversation with Jan (CS), I ordered the following parts:
1 - 516438 SCREW 3/8-24X3-1/2
1 - 517085 SCREW 3/8-16X3
2 - 515013 TRUNNION SUPPORT
2 - 517021 BUSHING
2 - 517635 SCREW 10/24X3/4

The cost of the parts was $26.58 including $6.99 shipping.

FYI - The 10-24 screws are required for the Tilt Indicator Scale, due to the added thickness of the plastic Trunnion Support.

Also the cast iron design does table not use the plastic Trunnion Supports and both of the large screws are different and the old split bushings were a press fit.

What neither myself nor Jan knew, was that the bushing diameters were enlarged when the bandsaws were changed to the aluminum table design. I wrote that I had access to a Bridgeport Milling Machine and SS gave me the new dimension for the bushing holes in the housing. It is .696+/-.002, which allows for a slip fit for the bushings. We bored the holes on Friday with a 11/16 drill and the holes measured .688 when finished. Knowing that the new bushings measured .689, we chucked them in a lathe and used emery cloth to remove .002-.003 for a smooth slip fit. On Saturday I put everything back together and my bandsaw is working A-OK.

Hi,

Thanks for the update.

So as a parting question, things work except for the need to have a Bridgeport Milling Machine to do part of the job....

Well I'm glad you got yours working again, now I have to hope mine doesn't suffer the same problem as I don't have access to a milling machine. Well I guess the other option is to go to the newer AL table via the conversion route.

I'm saving your report in paper form with my bandsaw information in case it comes up at a later date. I'm really glad you took the time to inform us.

The holes could be bored out with a drill press, instead of a milling machine, but you need to have a way to accurately find the centers of the existing holes and have a table big enough to hold and clamp the housing.

Updating to the aluminum table does not require changing the bushings. Only the table is replaced, using the same four bolts as the cast iron table.
