Can anyone tell me two things about my fence ?

1. there is a large hole in the top of the fence and there is a provision for a setscrew both in my picture and the parts breakdown from shopsmith....Can anyone tell me what it is for?

2. Is there anything missing from my Rip Fence base part #NA Reference #220 in the parts breakdown...

The hole in the fence accepts the mortising holddown. It is held in place by the setscrew.

The base of your fence looks normal to me, though I cannot see the tip of the second set screw (ref. 221).

Damn...You have eyes like an eagle....There is indeed a setscrew missing ....

The hole can be used for several other operations as well. You can use the dead center from the lathe setup to create a center point for cutting at the jigsaw or for use with a disk sander etc.

One thing I like to use it for is for mounting a 12" disk sander for hand sanding.

Those set screws well the one you have and the one you are missing are for off setting the fence. They are not for squaring the fence to the table. So they need to retracted for every thing but off setting the fence, normally done for sanding operations.

Interisting but I can't visualize how you mount a 12" disk sander for hand sanding. ..Have you made up a stub shaft out of 5/8 rod?..

You use the tailstock chuck adapter(or whatever it is called). It has a MT2 on one end and a flatted 5/8" 'shaft' on the other. After attaching the sanding disk to the shaft end, the tapered end is inserted in to that mystery hole.

As for the 'missing set screw' I say good riddance! The one there will do the offsetting as well as previous versions that only had that one setscrew.

More specifically sanding to width. Or 'edge' sanding like a jointer.
