Dual Bearing Quill (got data?)

Post by reible »

The shopsmith I use as a drill press and SPT stand is due for a bearing change in the quill. It was getting bad last year already but I just put it off. Now it is to the point that I can't do that anymore.

Pulled the quill out and as the manufacturing date suggested it has a two bearing quill. This was used machine when I got it but at least the previous owner(s) had been oiling it as it smelled of 3 in 1 oil. I didn't have to do anything special to it other then some fresh lube and a bit of cleaning. So for the price I've been quite happy with it.

It is one of the last "B" version, and is the newest one I own. Since I don't have a history with the machine I can't be sure but I think it is the original quill and other internals.

It has been mentioned that there are 5 version of the 2 bearing quill but I don't recall us building a list of which is what.

If you have knowledge of of your quill and want to proved data please do so.

Headstock Date 021391

The front bearing has a 17mm bore and outside of 35mm, width of 10mm.

The back bearing has a 15mm bore and outside of 32mm, width of 9mm.

It is a two piece shaft in shaft with a drive pin for connection.

Bearing numbers / manufacture
60032
60022
TPI (Taiwan)

Both bearings have shields on both sides.

Replacement bearings

None yet.

ps

I'll add a disassembled picture later.

I'm doing the same thing to mine now. Got the Nachi sealed bearings today from VXB.com.

I was rather hoping that we could adopt a format along these lines:

Headstock Date 021391

The front bearing has a 17mm bore and outside of 35mm, width of 10mm.

The back bearing has a 15mm bore and outside of 32mm, width of 9mm.

It is a two piece shaft in shaft with a drive pin for connection.

Bearing numbers / manufacture
60032
60022
TPI (Taiwan)

Both bearings have shields on both sides.

Replacement bearings

None yet.

I don't have the time or inclination to search for data so if anyone wants to provide that (see format above) I will be willing to compile what comes in.

Just though this might be useful to us as a group.
