Shopsmith Forums

This came with my two used shopsmiths. I haven't been able to identify it yet. Any ideas? It is about 4 x 5 x 7.5 inches.

Luckily it isn't a 'spare' part left over after I finish cleaning and reassembling the machines. I've had none of those.

Of course that might be because I haven't reached the reassembly stage just yet!

I’m a total newbie when it comes to recognition and name of parts, but this looks to me like a base for something. The hole with the thumbscrew insert seems designed specifically to hold a post that probably holds something intended to be movable, up and down, its length.

Of course I’m just guessing. What that might be for, or even if it is to be found among Shopsmith tools or parts, I cannot suggest.

I just got one with the 500 I acquired, and I haven't figured out what it is either. Since we both got one, it must be for a Shopsmith or a really weird coincidence.

yeah, it is a base for something. There are two bolt slots on the side opposite the hole with the thumb screw. Oddly, the thumbscrew goes in at an angle in a way I've only seen shopsmith use on the quill feed handle and the like (not that I've seen all the parts there are).

I could be wrong but I think it might be part of a blade guard assembly (?) I'd have to wander out to the shop and look around and it's too late for that but I've seen that part before.

it is indeed a part of a blade guard. from an older 113.xxx series craftsman table saw.

Well, isn’t this quite the three pipe problem?

Specifically — Why is Shopsmith issuing Craftsman parts to its own customers?

My best guess (and likely the worst), is that packaging and shipping is conducted by some third party warehouse operation denizened by workers in the habit of tossing in the odd bit here and there based on habit due to lack of managerial oversight.

If not that, then I find it difficult to understand why Shopsmith would maintain a stock including any Craftsman part at all.

The original poster said his came with a used Shopsmith. It's very common for random parts from other equipment to wind up included with a used Shopsmith.

Did the one you have come from Shopsmith? Or did you also get it with a used one?

Idcook: I think it more likely it is just a kind of wild coincidence that two of us have them. I bought my shopsmiths from someone who has a basement with various stationary tools I gather he used more for repairing his large sailing boat and less for woodworking for the sake of woodworking and he could easily have just mixed it in by accident. Considering guards are often removed and craftsman is a common brand, and that this piece suit looks like a shopsmith part, I think it isn't as surprising as it first sounds.

I'll have to return it along with the parts to an aluminum audible framing square I also found in the box. Now, if only he has included the real upper guard...
