Lathe adapter

New to this forum - Just purchased a Mark V 510. Is there a lathe adapter for the Shopsmith to fit a morse taper? Have a pen mandrel & nova chuck and would like to use with the taper..

Hi, Goofy! Welcome!

A #2 morse taper should fit nicely into the tailstock. If your chuck won't fit down to the mandrel tube, you can use Shopsmith's 1/4" router bit holder, (assuming your tube is 1/4"). http://www.shopsmith.com/ownersite/cata ... shield.htm

If you want to try it, you could try to hold the tube with a drill chuck. However I'm told the drill chuck is not designed to hold the twisting force of a router bit, so might be a problem holding the mandrel tube.

I was given a #2 morse taper mandrel with a "mandrel saver", so I had two #2s on one stick. Put the fixed #2 in my chuck and used the "mandrel saver" in the tail. http://www.pennstateind.com/store/PKMST ... odpage=1PK

It looks like you could use the ISNS adapter from this page.

For the pen mandrel, if you can't hold it with the chuck, then try this.

Shopsmith used to sell a pen mandrel, but I don't think that it is carried any longer.

The SS will not accommodate MT2 in the head stock.

Options:

Option 1: Unscrew the mandrel from the MT2 taper and use either a drill chuck or as stated the 1/4" router adapter. I have used the drill chuck, it works fine, you should NOT be pressing into the mandrel so side loading a tiny spindle like a pen blank is not a problem.

Option 2: Visit Penn State Industries and purchase their mandrel with SS adapter. I also have one of these and it works well especially with an MT2 mandrel saver.
