New Cabinet- Big Problem

have very limited storage space for the Shopsmith (the space between two parked cars). The cabinet I have used for years was very inconvenient and made it difficult to get out of my car when it was parked in the garage.

I finally built a storage unit for under the Shopsmith. Almost everything was from what people threw away or was cheap at garage sales. The 3 large drawers are from a metal cabinet that a friend who was moving gave me 30 years ago. It was too tall to fit under the SS. I didn’t want to spend money for drawer slides so it slides on rails. Not optimal but free. Construction was dictated by the height of the drawers and I wanted space at the top to store my router table top as well as room on top for two mats and space at the bottom to slide the Hospital tray table underneath. This dictated that the only wheels that would fit were roller-balls from Harbor Freight. This created an unforeseen problem.

Whenever I want to open a drawer the cabinet rolls. I need to use some sort of floor stop. One that might work is the rubber wedge but it is a hassle. I doubt that the hinged type will work. Another option is much more elaborate and expensive. I have 7cm clearance from the bottom of the cabinet. Of course I have room to add an external runner and attach something to that. Any suggestions on how I can make something?

I think your storage unit is admirable. You could mount one of these toggles to either side to anchor it when in use...

Shopsmith doesn't sell that style. I found it here.

There are many versions of this clamp. I wish I could find a catalog that showed them all.

Thanks, Dusty. I think that is the solution. Found them on Amazon ($14 for two).

I was looking for something more automatic; e.g., electronic, digital or even better based on willful thinking (I will it so) which is depicted often in TV. Perhaps if I had a pen and a phone I could lock and unlock that cabinet with no effort at all.

You are welcome, db5, but all I did was go sit in the shop and look at the Mark V to see if I could think of a way to secure your cabinet.

I was trying to come up with a way to capture it in place with some sort of magnetic arrangement.

I was thinking a strong bar magnet on top of the cabinet close enough that it would capture the bench tube. Being magnetic, if strong enough while at the same time weak enough, it would hold the cabinet in place while allowing it to be pulled out from under the Mark V by just pulling.

A couple of plunger type door stops like this will keep you from having to bend down to lock/unlock your cabinet.
