When I start the beltsander, invariably the belt begins to slowly track toward one edge or the other. When I try to adjust the tracking, I usually end up slightly over correcting and so the belt moves back and forth a couple of times until, finally, I get it dialed in. Once dialed in, it usually stays put while I'm using it -- until I turn it off and restart it. Then I begin the process all over again.

What's the permanent solution for this state of affairs?

This is an old belt; when I got it I crowned it.

I don't know if there is a "permanent" solution. Try installing a new belt. I have found that if you sand in one area of the belt more so than in other areas then the belt can stretch in the area of use and tracking will be difficult. If that does not help then dismantling and cleaning may be the most permanent remedy.

Release the tension, and press in/out on the idler drum to make sure both sides are free to slide in and out.

A thorough cleaning may be needed as just mentioned.

When 'correcting', make small adjustments and allow it time to react.
