My question is what is the guidepost for? Not sure what the "guidepost" is, but the "guide rod" holds and positions the upper blade guide. I don't have the 'lower backup', can someone tell me what material it is made of and is it essential for the jigsaw? The manual I have says it is only for saber sawing (i.e. when you use a saber saw blade and don't use the upper chuck). I have no idea what material it is made of. It looks vaguely fiberous.

I am also missing the instruction manual, it's the model with the round tubular arm. That's the model 610. Does anyone know where I can download one, all the links I've found no longer work. I have a pdf copy of an ancient (1965) manual but it is too large to post. If you PM me I can send you a copy. The photos probably aren't as clear as the later manual, but it should give you what you need.
