Pro - Allows continues use when age makes one too weak to raise to vertical.

Con - Can cause interference since it 'consumes' space at the right end of the way tubes thus restricting carriage and headstock range on the way tubes. Also if double tilt is 'added' it must be disconnected to raise left.

That's the way I see it.:) I don't need it 'yet'.;) I can still 'raise/lower' the headstock on the way tubes with it in vertical.

I have both, double tilt and lift assist. I seldom use it in drill press mode I have a small Craftsman drill press, but like to use it as a router so the lift assist stays unhooked until I need to raise it. Sometimes I'm too lazy to hook it up so I raise it without it. In my case I could have done without it, but it was one of those "Wow that would be nice".

A more proper date for larger bench tubes is 1962!

It lifts it up from the left so the headstock is under the table. Like this.

You can acquire a 10ER for $75.00, cut the stand in half, or a 500 shorty, raise it to vertical in drill press/drum sander mode and leave it there. It has a very small footprint. No need to use a lift assist on your 500/10/20. I never use mine, it just gets in the way.
