a couple of questions. I just got a shop smith markV used. The speed control doesn't work, but its been sitting in a garage a while and it looks like I need to free up the bottom TQ converter so it will move freely. Is this the standard practice? Also my speed control has a stop that comes in around 3/4 full speed and it hits the end of the groove. I have seen references to greenies and brownies and so forth, whats the difference? Mine has all green sheet metal and a green rear cowling, yet the main unit seems to be grey. When buying parts or servicing is there a difference between these that I need to observe? Is there a TQ converter on the top pully as well? This positive stop groove on the control, is that the wrong one? Appreciate any help I can get. My dad had one of these and I used to use it all the time but never had to service it so all I have is my knowledge of other machines that I can apply here.

Welcome to the forum. You have come to a place where you can get either help or grief. I'll start with some grief.

DON'T ATTEMPT to operate the speed control unless the the main shaft (upper shaft) is turning. Changing the speed control when the shaft is idle will do damage to the speed control. If you just have to do something, vacuum and/or blow in out and obtain of container of machine oil (Zoom Spout Turbine Oil).

With that, I shall wait for pictures. The serial number would also help. Help will surely come but will be more helpful after this group receives pictures.

A greenie has green belt cover and motor pan. The headstock casting is 'silver'.

More than likely from your description, you have an "A" headstock casting.
If you look under the power switch, there is an arrow. Press in on that arrow to allow adjusting the speed above 'saw-joint'.

There is no 'torque converter' but a variable speed drive known as Reeves drive. The speed control moves a 'control' sheave on a pulley riding on the middle idler shaft and a spring on the lower motor shaft floats and maintains the belt tension by allowing the belt to position in/out on the lower pulley.

It is very important to keep the movable sheaves well lubricated so they move along their shafts easily. Since you have an "A" casting, this is more trouble than a newer casting.

First as all have said pics, also the "stickeys" on the maintenance and Repair" are more then enough reading for a bit, many wrote by the people answering your questions prior to this post of mine.
A word of caution, that guy with the Avatar of a big Stetson, JPG, can and will beat you up if your wording in not in his wording!!!!!!!LOL!!!
JPG has written the book on these machines, along with Bill M, but do to health issues, Bill does not post much but has written many of the stickeys here. You are in good hands here. Many of us have SS dating back to the late 40s, the ER10s, and then the version since then that is the same and current style, minus some up grades. They last forever with some care. If the German engineer immigrant, after WW1, that designed them was in Germany for WW11 we might have lost!!!!!!!!!!!

Do realize that pix is a teeny tiny piece of the original pix from which it was cropped from.

And to be more exact, I purchased it at a Mennonite store. They are more open minded re Edison and Tesla etc. Actually when I purchased the hat, the store was lit by old sol and the cash register was battery operated. Newer owners have added electricity. Seems the 'order' has varying beliefs. Some drive cars, and some use one horsepower 'vehicles'.
