All, I have 2 ER 10s, a greenie, goldie, Mark 5 and many other power shop tools. I am not bragging. I have an detached shop, not heated, and some in my heated basement. I dend to work in the summer shop, in the summer, som3e power tools are in the basement and make trips to there for there use in the summer time.
The greenie is going to stay in the summer shop for a dedicated sanding and H boring machine, dust issue. The goldie will be rebuild down there, (basement) and my winter jointer on it. The ER down there now just a 3 pulley system, maybe for lathe work if I get back into it this winter.
In the shop I have the other one for drill pressing, TS, planer, spindle sander, compound miter saw, 48" jointer, ect. Router table will be in the basement for the winter, along with the TS, band saw,(not used much), .
My ? is!!!!!!!! DRUM ROLL!!!!!!!!!!!!I have 2 Ers, 1 I would like to dedicate 1 as a drill press, in the summer shop, and the other for a turning lathe in the basement. I can handle the cold to go to the summer shop in the winter for a bit to use the machines out there if needed. I have 1 ER speed changer, and need the slower RPM of that on one of them, my thought is, put that on the drill press, and WHEN I get into lathe work, in the basement shop, drop the $300.00 for the Leeson DC motor and controls for the basement ER didicated lathe.
Also to save summer garage space, not cut the ER dedicated drill press, but shorten the support base, move the tube supports forward on the shortened base, encase ever going to horizontal, and the tubes would rest on it , between motor and table, instead of the end.
Whada ya think about that???

So you are putting the tie bar between the headstock and the table?

Check out this YouTube video by Carl Holmgren. Shopsmith 10ER .
He has a great setup for a 10ER drill press that can still be used in horizontal mode.

RPD, Ya that is what I am talking sorta!!! Watched it B4, some one here sent it to me but was not thinking that yet! Thanks. He mentioned a "jack shaft", also that term came up in a different You tube, what is it?

Tie bar, no, HEAD REST!!!! Move that to a midpoint of, the HS, as in the video, but I would prefer it fixed, not a floater like in the video.

A jack shaft is a shaft with two or more pulleys that is mounted between the motor and the upper shaft. (like the speed changer)
To enable the use of larger pulleys, (greater change in speed), it is usually mounted behind the way tubes.

There used to be another album in that section that showed a 10ER base that could be expanded or contracted, (like a dining room table when you add leafs). I am having difficulty locating it right now but will post a link if i find it later.

Since you want 'stability' securing the 'tie bar' to the 'headrest' should be de rigueur!:rolleyes: Geez them frenchies spell stuff wierdly!

Not to mention some of the toothless in KT!
