What's it good for?

Post by BuckeyeDennis »

I'll be visiting the tri-cities area in Tennessee in a few weeks, for a niece's wedding. Which of course meant that I had to see if there were any bargains on the local Craigslist.

I'm sure that I could get this real cheap. But then again, I'm not sure what it might be good for.

I could use another 10ER for a wall-mount drill press, but too much stuff is missing on this one. Any ideas?

I'm with you, Bob. Gotta be good for something. We'll show those naysayers! :D

Can you put ER tubes on a 520 to soup up lathe mode?

Steve should be checking in soon. Unfortunately, the coffee-table parts are MIA. But I'm counting on him for lathe-extension designs, or maybe a push-me pull-you twin-headstock idea.

To improve stability, yes. Only the wall thickness differs from a Mark 5/V/VII. All are 52" long.

Steve's checkin' in.

Yes, the wall thickness differs, but that just BARELY is the reason. With wall thickness comes mass. And, with a lathe, mass matters. (That is why all the GOOD lathes use CAST IRON whenever possible.) (Oops, did I just throw all you "aluminium" lathe guys under the bus? Hope it was an "aluminium" bus.)

I'd give this guy at least $25 dollars, just for the way tubes, and the cast iron IF I was close by.

Dennis, he didn't mention a price. If you can fit the way tubes in your car, I'd say to jump on this, like a june bug on a "deposit." (Or, something my cats left behind.)

And, you have some parts to build a real Shopsmith!

steve
10 ER, stripped down.
Basic 10ER, Parts machine. Will be a semi-dedicated drill-press machine.
10 ER, a "survivor" of the trailer fire, in the back yard, needing restoration. Has a Mk5 headrest. Finally, stripped down.
Numerous parts, for Model 10 stuff. Except for lower saw guard, A and B adapters, I've got it.

Looking for one more, or some 9 inch extension table raisers.
