One thing I like about it is its ability to adjust to any slot width and hold tight.
One thing I don't like is that when the dial indicator is out far from the slot, it will flop down on the table. You have to hold it in place as in the second pic:

So at times you must hold it to get a correct reading just as Nick indicated you have to do with the SS brand. But unlike Woodpecker, apparently the SS comes with a choice of tip. That is a nice feature.
To use the Woodpecker Gauge on the SS table miters, you put the 2 thin bars in the slot against each side. If your fingers are nimble this is not hard, but mine aren't so the bars have a tendency to fall into the middle. Anyway, should look like this:

The larger bar is then placed on those. Both smaller bars need to be snug against the larger one:

The dial indicator section is then placed over the larger bar. You have a choice of pukas for placing the section:

The dial indicator is like all others: the facia can be rotated and locked to set 0 anywhere you wish and there are 2 black clips that can be moved to denote a min and a max.
I haven't, but I imagine you could clamp the dial indicator section to a vertical or horizontal bar on a magnetic base to use the dial indicator for other purposes.
The red portion is aluminum and the bars, I believe, are all chrome plated steel.
