I have the opportunity to buy someones complete shopsmith workshop.
$3000 for everything
1984 Mark V upgraded to a 520
Bandsaw with power station
Jig saw with power station
Belt sander with power station
Strip Sander with power station
Delta planer
Jointer (unsure of brand)
Room dust collection system --> He says it is something you would have in an adjacent room and run piping to equipment.
Also has a pile of walnut lumber
It was used less than 10 times, was purchased new in 1984 and never really got into using it. He is moving to retirement home and needs to sell.
$3000 for everything.
Do you think this sounds like ballpark good price? I know it is hard to tell with not knowing what type of planer/jointer/dust collector it is.
Thanks for advice!
Nathan
Is this a good Deal?

I was thinking it was a little high, I hardly ever come across the power stations, which made me ponder if it was worth the price. I was thinking
$2,000 may be a little fair.
What is the big difference, other than the red safety switch between a 1984 model Mark V with the old toggle switch and the newer 510s with a red safety switch?

Depending on the non-Shopsmith components, $3K may not be so high. The question is, do you have a need/want for/ability to fit/use everything and if not, for how much could you sell the unwanted items and how quickly.
Are you saying that there are 4 Power Stations, one on each tool? New Power Stations run $600, the SPTs run $290-550 each.
Based on your description with a few unknowns and no pictures to judge condition, I'd have the following prices in mind as a starting point for what I might consider a fair but good deal.
SS - $750-1,000
4 SPTs, 4 Power Stations - $1,000 - 1,200 for all
Delta planer - $100-300
Jointer - $100-???
Dust collection system - $50-1,000 or more, what kind of piping, fittings, etc., are included
Walnut - $2-5 per board foot (double that or more for retail) depending on width, thickness, quality

The next thing that pops in mind is the dual-bearing quill. To my knowledge that isn't included in the upgrade kit. Whether or not you would benefit from that is dependent on what you'd be doing with the SS. It helped me when using it for a lathe on bowls, hollow forms (unsupported on the far end); otherwise, probably wasn't a lot of benefit for other tasks for me.nhelsinger wrote:I was thinking it was a little high, I hardly ever come across the power stations, which made me ponder if it was worth the price. What are you wanting ???
A good deal is when both sides think they made a better deal then the other guy. A great deal is when you know you did. This is not a great deal. Maybe a good deal if it is exactly what you are looking for. That said, do you really want all those power stations ? Is your shop set up to have all those plugged in at the same time or will you be pushing and pulling SPT's all over the shop ? What is your goal for your shop ? That is a lot of money and equipment sitting around. Now if you plan to sell off the extra stuff then maybe it is a good deal. Are you prepared to deal with the selling process ? Some users here buy the whole shop at once others build as they go. If it fits your budget and it is exactly what you are looking for then GO FOR IT ! Offer less with CASH in hand and I bet he will take it.

Understand there are power stations, and power stands.
A power station can drive one SPT at a time, but most of them since they mount similar to mounting them on a Mark x. A power station has a variable speed control(smaller range than the Mark x).
A power stand is a permanent mount for a single SPT and only changes speed by moving belts/pulleys.
Power stands are cheaper than power stations.
A Pix would reveal to us what is actually included.
I would assume more than one SPT being turned on at a time is not likely.

If you don't have pictures maybe we can resolve this question in reverse.
These are Power Stands.
This is a Power Station.
You can see for yourself what new ones cost.
