Hi All - my father-in-law recently passed away and I've found this in his garage. Can anyone explain to me what it is and how it would be used. The shaft clearly has "Shopsmith" written there along with "1/2"...

It is a hollow mortise chisel. Fairly useless by itself, it is part of a mortising attachment that looks like this in use:

A special drill bit fits up inside the chisel. The whole set looks like this:
