1/2 Inch OSB Shelf

Don't ever let anyone tell you that you can't build something useful and good from OSB. I bought two sheets of 1/2 inch to cover my patio doors during a hurricane threat that didn't happen. When we needed some shelves for the bottom of our closets I made these from the unused OSB. That was more than thirty years ago and they have been in constant use. The shelves are in 1/8 inch deep dadoes and its held together with drywall screws. There is 170+ pounds on the top shelf in the photo and it barely sags.
Sadly it may not survive the recent flooding of my home. Note the wet area at the bottom.

Cut off the water damaged portion and it is still good to go with a smaller lower storage area.
OSB purchased today may be a different story; especially if you buy it at a box store.

It was shown on "This old house", that plywood held up MUCH better than OSB. The 9lb. 2X4 shot at the window, bounced off the plywood and went through the OSB.

It dried up fine. I can barely tell it got wet. It's inside with the dehumidifiers now and in 24 hours....
That is a good point you make about the modern OSB.

I hurricane country some time you can't get plywood so you take what you can get. In any case the primary concern for me was keeping water out and preventing the door from coming out. In that house 2x4s thrown that hard would have gone through the walls.

I wonder if that would work better than buck shot for home defense.

Just download the plans for the Mini Marshmallow Crossbow and adjust to size
