Owner's Weekend/Academy Classes in July

Shopsmith is considering hosting a special event in July. I cannot give you all the particulars (because there aren't any), but the overall plan goes something like this:

Drew and I would suspend the Sawdust Sessions for July and concentrate on those few of you who still want hands-on personal woodworking instruction. We would teach a six-day class in which we would help six of you build an heirloom-quality project (probably a grandmother clock) from July 12 to July 17 the emphasizes the five basic modes of the Shopsmith, then teach another six-day class from July 21 to July 26 in which another six would build a projects that uses all of the SPTs -- probably an inlaid Gerstner-like tool box. Both classes would begin with a field trip to the Frank Miller Sawmill for a factory tour and an opportunity to purchase some truly spectacular lumber.

During the weekend in between -- July 18, 19, and 20 -- we would have an Open House for Shopsmith owners and wannabees with free woodworking seminars, opportunities to try out or get advice on any Shopsmith tool, a woodworking project show-and-tell/contest, and an opportunity for those of you who have used tools -- or want to acquire used tools -- to do some buying, selling, and trading.

This is an idea that I am floating. we haven't yet decided on all those pesky little details like cost. But if you're interested and might come to the classes or the open house, ping me.

Sounds like a great plan (to me anyway).. Unfortunately, I'm guessing it will require travel for those of use on the left coast.. Unfortunately that counts me out.. Too pinned down to the weekly job and other tasks around the house at this point.. Sounds great though!

I'm interested!

To the very least, I would attend the open house, and, most likely, one of the six day classes.

West Virginia is just a country road away. Almost heaven.

Very interested in the learning, projects don't excite me. The tool chest is more interesting because I stink at making drawers and I assume it will have a lot. My wife in interesting in joining me, keep that in mind during planning. She has never used my Shopsmith but is not too old to learn.

Not retired; other obligations; etc. I will just have to be happy with the occasional TA and the Sawdust Sessions.

This sounds great! I'll be in the U.P. which is about a 10 hour drive. Would it be possible for Shopsmith to arrange a special rate at the Drury Inn or one of the other hotels across the road?

Okay I got the wive's relatives in Michigan City Ind and Pittsburgh Pa how do I convince my wife I want to take her north to visit her relatives and end up in Dayton?

I would love to be in there for the weekend and the following week building the tool chest. We have friends in Cleveland so I could say we are driving from Pittsburgh to Indiana with a stop to visit friends in Cleveland but how to di I get south to Dayton.

I guess I could claim a scenic drive across interstate 70 from Pittsburgh to Ind which would get me close to Dayton.

Ooh ooh I got it drive up 75 to visit the friends in Cleveland stopping in Dayton then over to Pittsburg and forget about he sibling in Indiana.

This might work!!! I will mention it tonight to see if she bites.

Nick: Do you think Dave F. can think up some kind of sale while we are there?

Ed: When you are in Dayton you are going to want some type of vehicle that can carry the stash of wood that you will purchase at the Frank Miller Lumber Company. For those of you who have never been there, it is THE ULTIMATE WOODWORKER'S CANDY STORE!

I would be very interested in the open house. Would love to see how the shopsmith is made.
Oh the advantage of only living an hour away from the factory.

I would love to attend one of the classes and the weekend. I am uncertain of my ability to do so at this point as our house has not yet sold thus I am uncertain when we will move. I suspect my being a no show for a move could destroy our 38 year marriage:-( Jim
