New To ShopSmith

Post by sreilly24590 »

Although I've done woodworking on and off over the years, now 60, I've always enjoyed it. I started in Jr. High School more years back than I care to think about. I had a full shop setup less a lathe but found myself emerged in other hobbies and just didn't use it so I sold all but my radial arm saw. Fishing and astro imaging took over and although I still do a good deal of each, the imaging has become an automated process at least up to the point of actually processing the images. So now I have time again and find myself the owner of a new Mark 7.

I haven't made the first cut yet as I've been busy assembling, adjusting, and adding a few options. I have to say installing the lift assist was a bit of a confusing ordeal. But looking at the old video and instructions cleared things up. I would add that having a picture of it installed would have been a big help.

So now I have the stock Mark 7, jointer, starter kit, and the dust collector is due to be delivered tomorrow. I've hung the pegboards and laid out a small shelf to sit the jointer when not being used. I'm excited to get back to doing some good old wood working. I've a few projects to replaced shed doors (floating panels), and do some honeydo projects. After all it was my better half that nodded her head when I looked at her after a live demonstration at Lowes. It doesn't hurt to have puppy eyes when needed.

I'd like to say that I've been trolling these forums and reading past post with great interest. It is a valued resource in itself and one I'm sure I will spend a good deal of time on. Thank you for your posts and thoughtful responses. I look forward to getting back into the old saddle.

Thanks Al,

Pictures aren't a problem. Once I get this all set up and organized I intend to post some. I'll likely add a section to my website on my ShopSmith experiences/projects. One astronomy project I'd like to do in the near future is a small eyepiece holder box. Although I do almost no visual work these days I have a nice collection of eyepieces that I'd like to protect.

I recently had hand surgery and didn't expect the SS so soon but given a few more weeks and I should have some better control. I still need to run my 240 volt circuit but seeing how it was my right hand I just don't trust anyone enough for me to hold the staples and have them use the hammer.

Welcome to the gang Steve. I got my 7 last summer. You're only regret will be that you didn't get one sooner. :)

Don't be afraid to ask questions. There is a wealth of knowledge here.

Be sure to tend to that honeydo list. You're going to be wanting more tools ;)

Welcome! :)

As for the 240v, unless you intend on sawing some very heavy stuff, It will likely be unnecessary(overkill). So, it can wait until you determine a need. ;)

Give that hand all the time it needs and then some! You will want it 100% later.

P.S. Nice web site!!!!!!

Jim.

Your quote at the bottom of your post reminds me of what I said with my first telescope. I told my wife that the telescope, a Celestron Ultima 8, would last me a lifetime. 5 telescopes later, I still have two of them, and many $$$$$ later she's sweet to have never repeated that to me. And no, her memory unfortunately is great.

I will at some point redo the roll off roof so that it will clear the telescope when it's any position. For that I may do an arched roof. I saw some great plans to do this.

And guys, thanks for the welcome. I expect I'll add some goodies as I get comfortable. I'd like to do some cabinets for the garage. But first I think I'll follow the handbook and get as familiar as possible. I need to practice jointary for sure.

Al,

I looked at attaching pictures but it seems the forum layout has changed since they were posted. The referenced image icon and paperclip do not seem to be visible in either IE11 or Google Chrome 40.0224.115. So I guess I'll either upload to my website and include a URL or find another way. I know it's doable as I've seen recent posts with the embedded pictures but it's a mystery to me. At least so far......

Yes, things have changed picture-wise. Scroll down to the bottom of the box where you type in your reply and look for the blue underlined link "Upload Attachment" then browse for your file and, after uploading, look for "place in line".

Thanks Al,

I saw the upload box but wasn't sure about the file size limit. I'll try one in this and see how it goes.

OK, that was easy enough.

So can anybody identify this small bag of parts that I have yet seen referenced to my new Mark 7.

It definitely fits the groove in the worktable but I have no idea what it goes on. Of course I haven't read all the manual yet, and that's a whole different post in itself.

Thanks,

Steve
