Recent Project

Hey All;
This is the recent piece I am finishing and installing in the Center of the Lodge Room Floor in my Masonic Lodge in Dover Ohio.
It is representative of the Blazing Star described in the Old Testament. It is made completely of Red Oak, planed to .350" and then biscuited together. there are 8 separate points each made of two assemblies.
There is a total of 80 pieces of wood in this piece. All of the angles were computed by hand and then my 520, Mini and 10ER were all employed to complete. it is stained two different colors and coated with two layers of high build finish.

Looks like another guy who didn't get/read the memo about not being able to do accurate work on a Shopsmith.

All,
I am humbled by your comments. As far an accuracy memo, must have gotten lost as it passed through my Pro Planer??. I hate to tell who ever thinks the Shopsmith Equipment is NOT accurate that they are misinformed, but they just might be. My 520 is a 510 upgraded. I bought my 520 in 1987. It is just as precise as new. Attached is a picture of the Altar I built that will sit on top of that star. The top has a 2inch thick piece of granite in it and weighs in excess of 300 lbs. It is all Red Oak. Each of the three lights contains 36 pieces of wood. The star by the way is 13 feet 6 inches in widest points.

Wow! Fantastic!
Now, pleeeeaaaase tell us you put that that altar (with the three hundred pound piece of granite in it) on top of your Shopsmith, then we can tell forum member Ed-in-Tampa to stop complaining about Shopsmith's shortcomings
(just kidding Ed-in-Tampa
).

Algale,
Actually the frame for the granite DID sit on top of the 520
for machining out an inaccuracy
in my Dewalt miter saw(Now Replaced with a 12" Milwaukee) I built a special table all around the unit, and then with a Dado, I milled out the in accurate joints and then inserted hickory pieces and then sanded them smooth, then through the joiner and then to my router table. The whole piece moved in 7 sections.

I have only been inside one Masonic lodge, but I was impressed and I think your project represents all the best of the principles I saw there!

Wow I am certainly impressed. I have been in a number of lodges here in Arizona which contain vrs. member constructed altars and lesser lights. I don't remember seeing the lights placed around the altar. Ours are always at the south side. Ohio vs. Az I suspect. The Douglas Lodge actually has the steps to climb during the 2nd degree. All the wood work is handcrafted.
