Need ideas for what to do with redwood slice

Post by bobgroh »

A goodly number of years ago (over 40 as a matter of fact!), my brother gave me a redwood 'slice' that he picked up during a trip out west. Pictures of the 'slice' shown below:

It is basically a slice through a redwood tree. My brother's idea was that it would make a neat coffee or end table top. Well, maybe that is an idea but that just wouldn't fit well into our house! So I have just carried it along with me over the years and now I think it is time to do something with it.

One option is making firewood out of it but this old chunk of wood has a bit of nostalgic attachment for me (my brother passed away 15 years ago) so I have to do something with it! Some of the ideas I've kicked around in my head are making cutting boards, using some of it for a stool seat, etc. Looking for ideas here! Any and all ideas welcome.

Oh my. Please don't cut it up or even worse use it for firewood. I will buy it and pay to have it shipped to me here in Utah.

A big clock? Not a bad idea although it would be a pretty darned big clock! I'll definitely keep this on the list.

Very little would go to waste if bottom and the virtually straight side was squared off and made into a table or seat for an entry way corner. Small table (like next to the grill) or seat for a patio. Also a thought of fastening it to a pole for a mail box (no other like it) if you are into that sort of thing.
Could also be cut up to make small boxes or frames to be given to family members. Hope you get some great ideas. I always debate what to make with a special piece of wood.

Dwight

It looks to me like the State of Michigan.

That is number one on the list!!!

Then I would hang it on the wall of the shop until I decided what to really do with it.

I have a slab from a Ponderosa Pine that is about four feet in diameter. I've had it for years and still haven't decided what to do with it.

This month's Woodworker's Journal has plans for a semicircular vanity with a redwood slab top.
