I'm now in a rush to get my 10E, serial number 2512, restored. I noticed tonight that it has the shorter base with it. I'm thinking that with a serial number that low it should have the longer base.

Does anyone have a Model E with a close serial number that can confirm this?

What do you mean by 'shorter' base? The hinge end had two different 'shapes' and the headrest had both two hole and 4 hole versions as well as both CI and aluminum. My 10E has the CI 4 hole headrest. I do not think the hinge end had a different mounting hole spacing, but mine has a round outer shape.

I would expect yours to also have the CI 4 hole headrest and the same hinge end. My SN is 3779.

I didn't explain that very well.

By "Base" I mean the end that flips, not the headrest.

Mine has the more "squared off" base. Making it a few inches shorter than the "Rounder" base. I think it should have the more "Rounded" longer base.

Do you agree?

Tom, over 60+ years, the base may have been changed.

But, if my memory (why can I buy decent memory for a
few dollars, but not "my" memory) serves me, the E model was the
"round" base was an earlier adaption. The more "squared off" base was
a later feature. Skip (at the ER group) would know, for sure.

AIUI the 'squared' off base came later, so yes I agree.

I agree a 10E would have originally had the longer base.
I have two 10ERs, one has the longer rounded pivot base and the other has the squared off pivot base.
Below is a list of 10E/ER design changes compiled by Skip Campbell and posted on the Yahoo Shopsmith 10ER Users forum.
It shows the change to the shorter squared off pivot base didn't happen til1951
