Woodsmith Guild Edition

While I wasn't watching I see that woodsmith has now changed their magazine to something new.

I looked at the preview they offered of the second one, you see just a few pages of it but it looks good. I'm thinking the $29 for 6 issues (a years worth) comes out to less then $5 a copy. Not cheap in my book but then my book is pretty old since I gave up getting magazines in the early 2000's.

I miss having something new coming in to look at and hold so I'm thinking I might go for it.

Anyone have opinions on this new version of their magazine?

It also seems you get an online copy that you can look at when ever you wish which might be nice if you can see it using your tablet or phone and are spending time waiting in the Dr. office or other such places.

I'm really out of touch in this area so would I be better off looking else where? I know in the past I've liked woodsmith so that is why I'm stating to look there.

I gave up my wood magazines years ago. I now get my 'fix' with coffee at Barnes and Noble. Unfortunately, refills are not free.

I was looking back and I think I stopped subscriptions around 2002 but I did buy an occasional copy after that, maybe 5 or 6 in all that time.

I really have two issues with doing this. First is the cost and second is the fact I know my kids will be sorting through them when I'm gone because I just can't bring myself to get rid of anything like that.

A third lesser issue is that I have a stack of "to make" plans that I know I'll never get even a tenth the way though and this will only add to that list.

On the other hand I can still learn and this magazine would be good for that.

I don't think anything has changed. They just changed the name. I have been a long time subscriber and nothing has changed. I still get the print issue and have access to the on line stuff. The only thing they did was change the name for what ever reason.

I'm like Dusty I check the Mag out at Barnes and Noble. If it contains something of interest I buy it. If not I just put it back in the rack and walk on. I average one or two year. So far I think I'm ahead of the game.

The only mag I subscribe to is Wood. I like the articles, the project, the reviews and yes even the ads.

What bothers me with most mags is they usually contain the same articles a month or two later than Wood. Very boring to read the same words a couple of months later.

My understanding is that Shop Notes was discontinued and those kind of articles are being blended into the new Guild version of Woodsmith.

I believe they stopped publication of ShopNotes and basically combined the two magazines. I have(had) a subscription to Woodsmith and ShopNotes and they pretty much extended my remaining ShopNotes time to the "new" Woodsmith Guild Edition. I liked them both when they were separate and I like the new version also. I have the complete set of ShopNotes but only a few years of Woodsmith.

I think I'll give it a try. It is only a year and I can decide just how well I like it with the 6 issues.

It sounds like the one I was looking at is the second of the new series. Now I wonder if I'll be getting the back issue (the first one) and the remain 5 or if I will get the second edition and on. Will have to wait and see I guess.

I miss magazines too. Like Ed said, something new coming at you. Every time I go to the dentist I wish my wait was longer so I could finish the article I'm reading. Maybe next time I'll go in an hour early. My dentist must get a few dozen magazines, many that I enjoy.

I just got the latest Guild issue. The main difference is that it's much bigger. There's two main projects and each one is about 10 pages long. And, as Woodsmith does, there are a few technique articles that go along with each project. Each of those is 3-5 pages long. Total pages are 66.
I miss ShopNotes, though.
