I picked up an old scroll saw (jig saw?) at a yard sale yesterday for $2. It looked pretty grubby, had not been used in years (spider webs, dirt and sawdust all over) but it cleaned up ok and on dis-assembly, appeared to be little worn. I wire brushed the worst of the rust off the parts, greased the innards and hooked it to the Shopsmith. Conveniently, the shaft is 5/8" diameter. It was obviously designed to be minimum cost to manufacture, has sleeve bearings and is very lightly made. It is missing the hold down foot.
I used the same base as on my 2" belt sander, i.e. floor flanges and pipe nipples bolted to the extruded aluminum horizontal piece; very easy to assemble and line up with the coupler.

Amazingly, it actually works pretty good.
