I rescued a pound pup (S/N: 156829) from a pawn shop that needed some serious lovin'. Good news and bad - I turned it on before I'd read through all the maintenance threads on this forum about what to do . . . and not to do. The good news is it didn't do any obvious damage. Well, any further damage. I didn't understand the speed issues until I took out the drive belt. It was about 2/3's the width of the proper belt and was small enough that it actually fit inside the replacement belt.
By the way, one of the threads that I read on this forum indicated that the adhesive on the back of a sanding disk is the stickiest stuff around. I have to disagree; I think it's the shmutz that forms with the lubricant and sawdust mix on the moving parts inside the headstock!!
