I recently picked up my 4th (3 that I'm keeping) shopsmith. It is a 510 with many extras for $150.00 on eBay.

What I'm looking for is some ideas to possibly dedicate a machine or 2 to certain functions. There have been stand alone drill presses (shortys, wall mounted ect), sanding stations, etc.

One initial thought is to mount my planer and jointer on some sort of mini, keeping the length just long enought to handle both functions. Or possibly a sanding station with a belt sander and disk/conical. I have a 510 set up with reverse so motor direction is not an issue. Or possibly a wall mounted drill press.

What I'd like to see is pictures of how my fellow Shopsmith addicts are using and have set up these types of dedicated units. I'm looking for some ideas on how I can utilize these by incorporating the experience of others here.

Any ideas, suggestions and PICTURES, would be GREATLY appreciated....

My 500 is setup as a dedicated sanding station. Beltsander on the Left, disk with the main and aux tables in place. This gives you a fence (not that important so the 500 fence works great) to push against and a miter to set angles if needed. I haven't changed it in months. I use the 10ER and the Mark 7 for all cutting and boring. I use the PowerPro for the conical disk.

My shop is shutdown as I am taking walls down to open up my "great room". All the machines are under covers.

I have two of my SS set up for dedicated tasks. There is a shorty that serves primarily as a sanding station (Disk, Strip and Belt). I also use buffing wheels on it. The second one is a dedicated drill press.

Oh, to have the space you guys have. I'm envious.

Besides my PowerPro 510, next to it I have this Rube Goldberg (or GoldHeadstock) machine...

I cut 18" off of all the tubes. I used the 18" pieces of the bench tubes to make the dedicated drill press.

What is the length of your tubes on the Shorty dedicated drill press? Is it stable? And what are the footprint dimensions?

Also I'm curious about the setup of your drill press table. How do you attach the tubes to the table and can you provide more details on what you did. That looks really slick.

The head stock and the end castings came from the upgrade of my full size MK V to a MK 7. All of the rest of the parts came from eBay except for the table raiser. The way tubes are thick wall 10ER tubes. They are not cleaned yet in all of the pictures except the last one where they are cleaned.

The bench tubes are the 18" pieces I cut off to make the shorty sanding station. The base is assembled with the tubes inserted in the end castings as far as they will go.
The table carriage, table and head stock are installed on the way tubes 180 degrees from normal. That puts them over the bench so the whole assembly is rock solid.
The tubes at the front of the table are not attached to the table. They are held in place by the end casting lock. The tubes are the old main table tubes from the double tilt upgrade of my full size MK 7. If you look at the last picture I put a 1/4" dowel through the holes in the end of the tubes so I could raise both of them into position with one hand and have a hand left to tighten the lock.
I also installed a table raiser. However, I don't move the table very often but it does help when I have to move it. It can't be installed per the SS instructions since everything is turned on the way tubes but the installation is straight forward.
The foot print is 19" X 33". Because the head stock and table are turned on the way tubes to be over the bench it is absolutely stable. With the solid support provided by the tubes at the front of the table you could stand on the table and nothing would move.

The last picture shows it as it looks today with the way tubes polished and some storage space underneath.

I had intended to cut the mark V I have to a mini but looking at the ones here it looks like if I want to run tools off the power take off and have a disk sander on the other end I will need to do a shorty. It looks like I can only use the power take off on a mini. Am I correct in this?
