PowerPro radio interference

Post by claimdude »

I have scanned through the older posts and this issue has been discussed previously. I didn't give it much thought when I read the posts the first time as my PowerPro did not create any radio interference. I installed a DYI kit close to 5 years ago (I think... may 4 years). I have had a Makita 18v radio that I use plugged into a wall outlet (not on same circuit with PPro). Last week I fired up the PPro and I got quite a bit of static in my radio. Today I turned on the PPro with the radio on and connected to the ac outlet. Static on both AM and FM. I then unplugged the radio and put an 18v battery in it. Still static in both AM and FM. So, same radio, same PPro 4 or so years later and now I get static. Someone had mentioned in a previous post that SS had a partial answer for the problem. Anyone have any newer info or help to offer?

Thanks
Jack

Verify grounding from the SS frame all the way back to the breaker panel.

No guarantees, merely something to verify.

There have been no changes in outlet or circuit but I will check it just the same. Thanks JPG!

Thanks for rekindling this topic for me. From my experience today I will add some observations to your own.

1. My simple clock radio near the PP, does not react with prominent static noise when the PP is plugged into 240V 4 wire outlet as long as the PP mounted switch is toggled to OFF. Upon toggling to ON the static starts loudly nearly making radio voices unintelligible.

2. My joggers battery powered radio receives no static from the PP in ON or OFF toggle switch position.

On the topic of grounding: my shop has a power distribution panel for this part of the house located within the shop and it powers both PP & clock radio. The ground wiring from that panel to the power service entrance is common to both PP & clock radio and is likely to transfer noise to the radio via ground or hot & neutral wiring. So for now, my thoughts will concentrate on non grounding issues.

1. & 2. above suggests that the noise is only conducted to the house wiring via the PP ac power cord. Initially the finding is promising because ferrite choke filters on the power cord may offer some relief if well selected/designed. My stock of this product in the odds & ends box is pretty limited for this test. For those interested in ferrite choke use, they are often seen on computer equipment such as cables to monitors, printers, etc.

Has anyone else investigated either ferrite chokes on the power cord,or on individual hot & neutral wires internal to the PP headstock? It would be useful to build upon that experience.

Don't spent too much time checking wireing. Instead check to see if your car radio has interference. I've heard the pulsing in my car up to a block away/ AM has more interference than FM.

The phenomena is the same whether the interference is witnessed in the car (any location that does not share the same power source) or in the shop. The phenomena is often referred to as " electromagnetic " interference. It may be EMI or it may be EMC. Either way, it is Electromagnetic. EMI is induced interference (that being sensed by your car radio) while EMC conducted.

Samo samo. The methods for combating it differ.
