Dedicated drill press

So I based my dedicated drill press on jsburger's design in another post.

Turned out nice. I will need to adjust the wheels a bit but seems stable and the leftover tubes will allow me to turn it into a shorty if I so desire.

As for now it fits right in.

Hey Beave, I like your design. Thanks for the credit. It really is simple to do. No modifications other than 18" bench tubes and turning the head stock and table 180 degrees on the way tubes. I have been using mine for a couple of years now and I can't think of anything I would change.

Only odd item I find with it is that the tubes are not 100% vertical, slightly angled so the table is angled as well (but perpendicular to the tubes). Looks like the base cannot go fully vertical due to the way its designed, but its only a slight bit off. That is unless i am missing something.

I think you are missing something. 100% vertical compared to what? The base is still tilting in the same direction as the original machine so that is not an issue. As long as the head stock and table are square to each other it doesn't matter.

Correct, they are square to eachother. Its just if I put a ball on the table it would roll towards me and its fairly obvious, but i ensured that locking pin is in good. I actually might drill it out and put a bolt in its place to REALLY ensure it doesn't come down. However, even at this point it is stable. I am just overcautious.

So overcautious I guess that when I put on my deck I used 2x12 boards for the framing (with a 6x12 main beam) and 6x6 posts to hold it up. The inspector took one look at it and said i should be able to park a car on it without issue. At least when I am dead and my bones turn to dust my deck will still be up.

The hinge goes slightly past 90 degrees intentionally. That allows the screw/dimple to function as a lock. Your modified drill press should then tilt slightly back, so a marble should roll towards the wall. Sure your floor is 'level'?

P.S. I am curious why the 'wheels need adjusting'.

Well this one pulls forward towards the user, just slightly. This is because the tilt casting hits the top of the leg. preventing it from going full upright or slightly past. Not sure if its the old 500 series that causes this or what. Floor is lightly slanted (garage) but not the cause here.

The wheels need adjusting, as in it seems possible to slide it around, as if they aren't being retracted enough when set down.

These are weird little things I haven't noticed with my 505 model, and i have only had this 500 model for around a week now.

I be curious if the bench tubes are 'horizontal'(level).

I do think maybe there is slop in the legs, just took it apart and looked at it... it seems as if the legs are not aligned correctly, not sure what this is doing it, but I am gonna play with it some more.

As for casters, they did fine prior to the modifcation so maybe i bumped something.

Are the legs 'splayed' out? Are the castings clamped correctly to the 'bench' tubes?
