Over the weekend my husband showed me a picture of a pie box and asked if I could make one. http://www.anthropologie.com/anthro/pro ... g.8w__Sg#/ I said I probably can I would just need to get some wood. Sunday he comes home from a run to the grocery store with .25 in x 3.5 in x 4 ft poplar boards and a 2 ft x 4 ft section of luan plywood. He then asks if I could have at least one done by Christmas for a gift. I now have one glued up, one stained and one with a first coat of poly drying. After I finished assembling one, that I made sure the pie pan he presented me with would fit, he then asks if the other pans would also fit. He then gets out various sized pans to try. I did not know that there were so many different sizes of 9 in pie pans or that he had that many. I ended up making spacers so the smaller ones do not move too much in the box. I was also surprised at the diffent depths of the different pans.

I do not like working with the luan. In several places the top ply is thin enough to see the next ply. I also do not know about the dovetails. I like them in thicker wood but not sure about in pieces this thin. I cut dadoes top and bottom on the boards then cut to length keeping track of which order they were cut so I could wrap the grain around the box. [img][/img]

Who knew there were things like this out there? Well I for one didn't.

BTW I'm not a fan of dovetail anymore, can't remember the last time I used them but it has been a long while. I do favor box joints for thinner wood like in your case but that is just a personal preference. I did a search on pie boxes and found most are just butt joints so yours would have to be conceded "fancy" with the dovetail joints.

Not sure what other option you would have to replace the laun plywood if shopping in big box stores but specialty stores do have more conventional thin plywood that would be provide a thicker outer layer(s). Bread board style glue ups could be done as well but at the expense of a lot more work.

It is an interesting idea for a build and gift and will keep it in mind for some other future year.

I could have done a glue up if I had more time and was allowed to choose the wood but hubby bought the wood without me. He thought the luan had an interesting grain pattern and wanted it used. I think if I was to do this again I would almost choose to use a 1/2 in thick sides and a 1/4 in top and bottom. I am not sure if I would use dowels or biscuits for gluing up the top and bottom but both would work.

A hobby store(locally Michaels) has multiply plywood in up to 12x24(IIRC) in various thicknesses that are fractional dimensions. Not cheap, but decent quality. Then there is their 40% off coupon for a single item in each Sunday's paper.

Personally, I like the dovetails.

Gotta agree that luan is a pain though. Not only is the veneer paper thin, it's brittle and splintery as well. Nonetheless, it can look like something a lot more expensive, if all goes well.
