Where is the rest of the story?
Re: Woodworking Bench from IKEA
Very timely! A new workbench is on my 2016 To Do list! I just bought a used Record Vise (model 52D) for the project.
I'd be curious to see the rest of the build when the video comes out (I couldn't find it).

Sorry guys I did not include more. Chris Schwarz is an amazing professional woodworker, author and teacher that I follow. He sells this episode as a DVD or download.algale wrote:Very timely! You can probably infer everything you need to build it from the preview Ed, but sometimes the devil is in the details. You making a bench?Ed in Tampa wrote:$15!! Wow! I am way too cheap for that!
Re: Woodworking Bench from IKEA
I have had one of the solid wood IKEA counter tops for about 7 or so years. I use as ... a counter top (in my laundry room).
It is an excellent product and a pretty good price but it never occurred to me to buy two and to laminate them (as the preview suggests) to make a bench top. That would get a little pricey.
I now have all the equipment I need to mill my own lumber and I think I could buy the same amount of board feet of beech or birch and do it for about half the cost, albeit it will take a while longer to joint, plane and glue it up.
But I like the dimensions, and design and it sure would speed things up to go the IKEA route.

Re: Woodworking Bench from IKEA
I briefly looked at the IKEA web site. The counter tops I saw were MDF and hardwood. I wonder if I just didn't look through them all. Saw your vice in the other post. I just scored a used one similar to it! I'll post a picture later. Not sure just where I will end up using it. Looking forward to seeing your project.algale wrote:But I like the dimensions, and design and it sure would speed things up to go the IKEA route.

There are some that are composites but this one is solid birch, per the description. http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/80274963/tomsalwasser wrote:I briefly looked at the IKEA web site. EDIT: They also have solid beech and solid oak http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/60274964/. It's even pricier.
Look forward to seeing your vise!
