I turned a bowl for my daughter as a Christmas present and after roughing out the blank I realized that some wood could be saved from a larger blank for some other projects.
The ambrosia maple blanks were 6" X 6" X 3" so I cut the corners square and turned the bowl. The corners were 3/4 X 3/4 ".

It looks like the pen blanks were completely cross-grain. Any challenges with that? The "end results" are beautiful.

Bill, this am when I saw the first pic, I said, pen blanks, and I am not a turner, then I said self, instead of having some arched cut off, wow, have a square, no matter what you use it for.

The cross grain was no problem either when drilling the blank or turning them. I think that when gluing in the brass tube it serves to hold the blank rigid.

I just could bring myself to pitch that much figured wood into the scrap can hence the pen blanks.

This idea (saving pieces) is often talked about, but rarely Shown.
Your posting is not only excellent, but it is needed for our collective enlightenment.
Now I'm going to look for the bowl blank surround I made back in December a year ago. Shame on me that I failed to realize the usefulness of the scrap!

Careful!!! This can become a fetish.
Says the one who has run out of room for 'scraps' and has to continually pick them up when the pile outvents.

I know! a fetish it is! The problem I was alluding to was not having an IDEA
of how to use the cutoffs to this advantage!
That's why this was such a great informative thread
