Today in the shop (nail driver)

Post by reible »

Lee Valley had a free shipping offer a while back and since I had misplaced my nail driver I picked up a new one. This is a tool I have had for a very long time, well the one that is missing that is. About now many will be asking what in the world is he talking about, so take a look at this photo. Can you pick out the nail driver?

Oh heck I forgot to reset the camera after today's outing...... anyway

You may want to take a look at this to find the current price and more detailed information.

This works for a lot of smaller nailing applications. Small nail and brads and even ones with smaller heads work like I have pictured. I'm working on a prototype where I need to put small molding in next to glass mirrors and it his by far easier then using a hammer or any other way I have tried.

They claim you can strike it with a hammer but I have never done that..... I'm guessing it would work but my old one was strictly a push arrangement.

I'm hoping that by buying a new one the old one will show up.... that almost always works.

So I did a short unedited video which you can watch here: It is shot so it can be watched full size, depending on how you view these it might be as simple as double clicking the video. No helpful audio.

Pretty cool tool for under $10.

If you have questions feel free to ask.

Great tool Ed. I have used one of these for more years than I care to remember and have driven thousands of nails with it. I am a scale modeler, primarily of period ships and this is an invaluable tool for the placement of miniature nails on and in delicate places. I bought mine from Micro Mark, a place that specializes in tools for the miniaturist. The quality of yours looks far superior to the one I have. Thanks for the post.

Moose, I love scale ships. I have an HMS Surprise (late 1700's) of Patrick O'brien fame in the living room. I would love to see some pictures of your work if you have some!

Well this didn't take long. I went out to the garage this evening to bring a piece of multi-track in for measurement and to make a sketchup drawing and low and behold my old nail driver was found.

And as always it was found in the last place I looked.

I guess this thread is a tribute to the thread about having a place for everything and everything in its place in the shop!!! :D

So where do you keep your nail driver? Or is it possible you don't have one yet?

Again if you have that few tools then it might be possible for you to have a place that it goes and gets put back too each and every time. My shop doesn't work that way. Besides just to confuse myself I move things from place to place over time and have to keep adjusting my thinking to where it is "now".

I'm sure you would hate my shop organization but love to have so many tools. I just don't have that many years left to start trying to do "a place for everything and everything in its place in the shop" the best I'll do is have everything in the shop and then go to somewhere..... in the shop.

Reliable, I have 2 30" high X 8ft peg boards on 2 walls with tools on them, my work bench has 4 drawers on the left side 2ft wide, right side is a 2ft door with 4 2ft wide pull outs, with what I use allot, on the bench is my chisel stand and a stand that my most used squares and measuring tools hang on, and a few other things that are used most often. I dont have to spend time looking for something. Its a mind set, do you want to work or hunt for something? Trust me, it takes less time to put something back in its place and know where it is for the next time, then to look/hunt around trying to find some thing when you need it. It called being productive, and not being frustrated, not putsing :)

OBTW, I dont use small nails/brads so I have no use for that tool, but if I did, it would hang on that mini tool board on my bench so it was just a reach away when I needed it. :D

Here is a post from Dec 2008 where I posted some of my storage areas. In the picture labeled stora5.jpg you can see the tool hanging in it assigned location. Can you spot it? If not let me know and I will put an arrow pointing to it. It's back home now.

FYI these cabinets are right above my front work bench. Right now there are 4 banker boxes of stuff on the bench top so there is no room to work there. Hope to have that taken care of before spring.

I doubt thee has enough room for all of Ed's tools in your shop!

Also I believe he has far less room in his shop than thee.

Mind set my A..! He does what he needs to do under his constraints.
